How do you interview an accounting firm without knowing accounting?

Questions that worked for me: who is actually doing my work day to day, what is your response time in writing, what happens in March when you are slammed, and can you show me a sample monthly package. The sample package filtered out half the candidates immediately.

Ask who does the actual work, how fast they answer email, and what happens when they are wrong. The last one tells you the most.

Also ask what software they refuse to work in. If the answer is "we are flexible," they are not.

Ask for a client in your industry at your size. Not a logo list. A phone number.

We did the reference call thing and it caught a firm that was great at tax and had lost 3 bookkeepers in a year. Thank you all.
